Chapter 6

Not Knowing What Can’t Be Known

Neither the Bible, nor Christian theology, nor science, nor mathematics, nor logic knows the fullness of Truth. None of these avenues is capable of either proving or disproving, beyond a reasonable doubt, the existence of God, of an afterlife, of individual human souls. In the final analysis, the only thing we know for sure is that we know virtually nothing at all.

And so, if man truly does know nearly nothing at all, then all of this philosophizing about what could be and what might be seems a fruitless venture. But such philosophical, critical analysis of existence is not a wasteful endeavor. Socrates suggested that a man gains much humility and much wisdom by proving to himself that he knows so very little:

“True wisdom comes from knowing that you know nothing.”

As I state earlier in the book: Though critical thinking may not lead a man to fully understand Truth, if nothing else, it steers him clear of the lies which the propaganda machine would ask him to falsely embrace as Truth. In differentiating Truth from deception, a man becomes enabled to live his life as a free man, capable of acting upon his own free will with minimized interference of outside forces. This drives human progress.

It is only through the processes of perceptive questioning, deep contemplation, and critical thinking that a man is enabled to once again take back the reins to his own life.

Knowing What Can Be Known

Socrates suggested that man knows nothing for certain. As much as I love Socratic philosophy, I have to disagree with him. After much deliberation within my own mind, I have come to the conclusion that there is indeed one thing that man can know for certain. It has been said many times, many ways, and it is the secret to happiness.

“So what is the secret to happiness,” you ask?

I want to reveal it to you right here, but I’m not stupid. If I told you the secret right now, you’d have no reason to buy my book!
